Easter Egg Hunt

We had an academic egg hunt with math and reading "problems." Each egg had a math problem or reading word to be read. When the problem was complete, we exchanged the egg for a piece of candy. The kids had a great sense of purpose and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Snow Day

On one of the FEW days over 40 degrees this winter, we went out for a few minutes in the melting snow. This was a sensory experience for all. Some were willing to touch the snow or ice, and some were only willing to walk in it. After a few minutes, we were all ready to go in, but it was fun and broadened everyone's horizons!

Seasons

This week we have been talking about seasons. We had a fashion show of sorts. Each child had to complete an outfit for either summer or winter and pose with the picture of that season. Here's what we came up with!

Promethean Board

We have added a new Promethean board in our classroom! It comes in two parts, the board, and the projector that is attached to an arm. It is essentially a large, interactive computer screen that will allow each child to interact with computer games, and custom made activities just for our room.

We will use our board for circle time and instead of our choice board activities. This means when you come in each morning, your child will sit on the carpet and play a game rather than choose a toy at the table.

The children and I will use a special stylus to "write on the board," but really it acts as a mouse would on a computer screen. We will use the tools below to write, color, move, and interact with activities on the board.

Below are sample slides from a game we will be playing at school to focus on the identification of facial expressions and emotions. We will use the paint bucket tool to paint the correct faces. If a child cannot read the directions, a speaker is available for them to hear the directions read to them.

Attendance: School is a continuous experience with each day's learning built on the day before. If your child must be absent, be sure to send a note each time he/she is absent. We must receive the note from a parent to excuse an absence.

Arrival: Students begin to enter the classroom at 7:45 to prepare for the day. The bell rings promptly at 8:00 to begin school. If you would like for your child to eat breakfast, please arrive by 7:30. Upon arrival, children will go to the restroom and begin their Choice Board Activity.

Assistants: Our classroom has two full-time assistants, Mrs. Pat and Mrs. Kam, and a part-time assistant, Mrs. Tina. We appreciate all their hard work to keep our classroom running smoothly.

Books: Our classroom has a wonderful selection of books for students of all reading levels. Students learn to read best by being surrounded by books. We hope that you will surround your child with good books at home. We also have books on tape and CD for children who have not yet learned to read, so that they can develop a love of reading, too.

Book Orders: Once every 4-6 weeks, I will send home Scholastic Book Orders. They offer age appropriate books at wonderful prices. When you order, you will be contributing “bonus points” to buy books for our class. If you would like to order, simply fill out the form on the back of the flyer and send it in an envelope with cash or one check made out to Scholastic.

Breakfast: Breakfast is served beginning at 7:30. Children should report to the room, and an adult will take them to the cafeteria. Breakfast is $1.25 per day.

Calendar: There is a calendar on our classroom website. Any updates to calendar events will be in our weekly newsletter.

Conferences: Twice a year we will have parent-teacher conferences. This year the conferences will be September 21 and February 22. If you would like to meet with me any other time, feel free to call or write a note to schedule a conference. I am always available to talk about your child’s needs.

Discipline: Because each child is different, discipline is handled differently for each child in our classroom, but I do have a general behavior plan for the room. Each child will begin with a circle to be the center of a flower. As they show positive behavior/actions, they will be allowed to add clothespin petals to their flowers. 8 clothespins make a flower and sends the student to the treasure chest. Clothespins can only be given, not taken as a punishment.

Dramatic Play Center: We have a dramatic play center in our classroom. This center is designed to promote social learning of roles and interactions expected in the home. We have a kitchen, baby dolls, and props to do different jobs (mail carrier, construction worker, doctor, nurse, etc.)

Encore: We will be participating in encore classes including Library, Guidance, P.E., and Music.

Field Trips: We hope to go on field trips this year that are both educational and fun. Chaperones are always welcome. If you would like to go with us, simply let me know. Depending on the bus situation, we may or may not have room for all chaperones on the buses.

Group learning: We will use small groups to address social skills in our afternoon centers. The children will be learning academic skills while taking turns, playing games, waiting, expressing wants and needs, and much more.

Illness: The question of when to keep your child home from school is often a difficult one, especially when decisions must be made first thing in the morning. It is important, however, to keep your child home if he/she is ill. This helps to make them more comfortable and prevents others from becoming ill. Children function more effectively in the classroom when they are healthy. You can always call or email to let us know that your child will not be coming. If you are still unsure, please be sure to check out the Putnam County Contagious Illnesses section (middle of page) of the Health Handbook.

Journals: Children will often draw or write more than they will verbally articulate to us. Your child will journal in a spiral notebook. Sometimes the children will write about whatever they choose and sometimes we will give them a specific topic. In the beginning of the year, the children will be expected to draw pictures of what they are journaling, and we will help them write what they would like to say about it. Eventually, they will be both drawing and writing about their own experiences, thoughts, and feelings.

Lunch: Our lunch is from 11:35-12:05. If you would like to have lunch with your child, just sign in in the front office and wait in the cafeteria until we come to lunch. Children’s lunch is $1.85.

Newsletter: Once a week I will send home a newsletter with all important information. A copy of the newsletter will also be posted on the class website.

Open House: Once school begins, will have open house. You are welcome to not only see our classroom, but see how we run each day. Open house will be August 25 from 4-6 p.m.

Peers: It is important that children learn social behavior from their peers. For this reason, I would like to invite a group of typical peers from other classes to join us in an activity every afternoon. They may be different children or different activities at times, but they will all be fun!

Questions: If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to write a note, call the school, or send me an email.

R
Recess: We will play outside for about 30 minutes everyday unless it is raining or below freezing outside. Please remember to send a jacket or coat when it is cold outside. If your child is too sick to play outside, he may be too sick to be at school.

Snack: Each day we will have snack. We ask that parents either send a daily snack for their child or send a larger container of snack food/drink to be shared by the children until replenishments are needed. The sharing method has worked in the past and been much easier for parents and teachers to manage on a day-to-day basis.

Toys: Toys at school are not allowed. So many toys get lost and broken, so we will try to avoid both.

U
Unique: Each child in our class is unique, and we want to capitalize on how special they are. We will be sure to treasure every child in our room.

V
Visitors: All visitors (even frequent friends) must sign in and get a name tag from the front office each time they enter the school. This may seem tedious, but it ensures the safety of all of the children in our building. Check in is not required for drop off and pick up.

W
Website: Our classroom website will always be updated with the newest dates, information, pictures, and news. We will also use our classroom website at the computer center to find the games appropriate to play at school. You are welcome to practice skills at home with the computer games in our "links for kids" section.

X
eXperience: School is not just about letters, numbers, and reading all the time. Young children need to experience school and life. I will structure my classroom not only to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also how to enjoy learning and being with other people.

Y
YOU!: I may be your child’s teacher for six or seven hours a day, but YOU are your child’s teacher for life. I will do everything in my power to make school a fun place of learning and social growth. Remember that your words and attitudes will also shape your child’s school experience. With your enthusiasm and love for school and learning, your child will also bloom!

Z
ZZZ: We will rest every day from 12:05-12:45. The children do not have to sleep, just stay quiet and relax. It is important that young children get rest midday and in the evening.

No Charges

Beginning today, there will be no charges allowed in the cafeteria. You will need to be sure that there is enough money to cover lunches for the rest of the year. If you have any money remaining in your account at the end of the year, it will be rolled over next year to whichever school your child attends.

Election Day

Tomorrow, May 4, is Election Day. We were originally scheduled to be out of school on May 4, but it will be a make up day for snow. WE WILL attend school tomorrow. After school activities will not be held on Election Day.

1st - 4th Grade Registration

Information will be going home this week about registration for next year. Parents will be asked to come in and register their children any time this week. The office requests that you physically come in to fill out all paperwork rather than us sending it home. The end of the year is fast approaching!

PTO Basket

About Mrs. Beach

Hello! My name is Natalie Beach. I am delighted to be your child's teacher this year.

This is my 5th year of teaching. I taught 4th grade in Sumner County for two years and Pre-K in Putnam County for two years. I absolutely love teaching and learning with young children.

I grew up in Sumner County, just minutes north of Nashville. I graduated from Tennessee Tech with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master's Degree in Instructional Leadership. My husband teaches Instructional Technology in the College of Education at Tennessee Tech and is a doctoral student at The University of Tennessee.

I believe that every child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and be happy. It will be my number one goal to help every child I encounter to do all three.
